March Meet the Maker

I stumbled across the March Meet the Maker at the tail end of last years challenge  and I’m excited to have been participating from the beginning this year. Everyday for the month of March you can tune into my Instagram page, @magick_socks, for insights into my artistic practice. And its also been a fun and interesting way to engage with other artists all over the world and see what makes them tick. Anyone can participate so if you want to share as well feel free to jump in with the prompts below!

The Challenge was created by Joanne Hawker to help get her out of a creative rut on Instagram. I’ve been feeling a little sticky with my relationship to social media as well and this challenge has been the perfect remedy.

#MarchMeetTheMaker is a 31 day Instagram Challenge, set by Joanne Hawker (and solely Joanne!) that runs throughout March every year. But it’s more than just a challenge, it’s a creative community that comes together to show people what they can do. It’s about building each other up, making new connections, telling your small business story, growing your confidence (and Instagram following) and most importantly, it’s about putting yourself out there. Taboo – 7th Online Performance Art Festival

I was thrilled to participate in the 7th annual online performance art festival on February 11th, 2018.  “Taboo” was a visual exploration of stigma towards women’s health. The piece was broadcasted live and around 15 people tuned in to see the improvisational performance. I had originally wanted four male players for the piece, but due to weather and other circumstances I ended up being one of the participants, as well as my husband. I am constantly thankful for his support in my zany art. The piece is still up online so go check it out and let me know what you think!

  • duration: 10 min
  • watch: 11th February 2018 at 9 pm UTC

DESCRIPTION: Four anonymous male figures are guided to move feminine products (clean unused ones) around as a commentary on the taboo of a women’s period in today’s society and to bring attention to the stigma of these so-called luxury items and the reproductive cycle. Using parameters as prescribed by the improvisational form “object chess” the players will spontaneously engage with the objects to create new connections between the players and the objects. Players take turns placing objects into a field. There are three options. 1. Introduce a new object, 2. Move an object already in play, or 3. Introduce themselves as an object (in this case their hand). There will be three, three minute rounds, in which a different cast of objects will appear in each round.

Celestial Beings Collection

Celestial Beings

Several years ago I collaborated with the non-profit Turning the Wheel to create a wonderfully whimsy deck of inspirational cards called “The Good Box.” The project was focused on reclaiming the word good as a positive meditation word and resulted in the creation of 30 affirmation cards all with a phrase about the innate goodness in all of us. My art is featured on the cards, and I played an important hand in the final design. After the completion of the deck of cards I felt activated to create more paintings inspired by the goodness all around us. The “Celestial Beings” Series grew organically from this starting point. The full series was on view at Fresh Thymes Eatery on 30th Street in Boulder this past summer.

Celestial Beings

Each multimedia painting was an exploration into the innate goodness around all of us. The mood created by the soft blues and purples adds a sense of ease and flow to spaces and my hope was that each would be a place of solace for the eye to rest. The name celestial beings came from a meditative journey focused on the stars, and from that meditation I felt a deep sense of the longevity of goodness that emanates from the great beyond.

My favorite piece from the collection was voted the winner of local jewelers “Canvas to Cuff” contest. “Celestial Being 6” is now a part of their EVOCATEUR cuff artist series. Canvas to Cuff

Thank You to everyone who voted for me in the 2017 “Canvas to Cuff” Contest.

I was honored to win the first annual Canvas to Cuff. This annual event provides Boulder professional and student painters the opportunity to have their original artwork replicated on an ÉVOCATEUR gold leaf cuff. Winning designs will be inducted into the Walters & Hogsett Boulder Artist Series, and winning artists will be rewarded with an ÉVOCATEUR cuff with their artwork and share in the proceeds of every future sale online or in-store!

What was your inspiration for the piece you submitted?

Motivational Charms

Who knew so much happiness could come from inch and a half circles and colorful notions.

Screen Shot 2017-11-10 at 4.12.18 PM

I truly cannot believe that the holidays are already upon us. I have had a quite a blurry time falling into fall and have missed you all and my art practice. So to jump back in with two feet I have created a new collection of motivational and inspirational manifestation charms on Society6!
These 12 charms speak words of wisdom that I wish to cultivate in my own life and came from a project I did this past spring to share a little piece of art with many of my closest friends. The charms were just too sweet to not share with the rest of the world, and so now you can collect all 12 on shirtsmugscanvases, tote bags, and more through Society6! I am especially found of the stickers

Mini Butterfly Canvases

You know what makes me happy? Mini art. Little tidbits of artistic magnificence that you can tuck away on those on walls in your home that are hard to decorate. Delicate watercolors and little Milagros and shrines and exquisite oil paintings. I love that stuff!

And now I have my own collection of little delicate masterpieces to share with all of you!

It all started with the acquisition of my cherished butterfly punch. I loved the little butterfly prints so much I wanted to showcase them and share them with the world. I bought a bunch of mini canvases and through the addition of art resin ended with a polished little gem of whimsy fun. Each butterfly is unique! Each butterfly is punched from one of my gelli prints. The patterns and shapes and colors of the prints reminded me of the kaleidoscopic beauty of real butterflies. This is just my first iteration on this project but I see it evolving to include different color palettes and inspirations. For now it’s simply a wild and eclectic explosion of color!

You can take these little beauties home on July 22nd at the A Place to B Studio Swap and Sell. Hope to see you there! Facebook Event

Let me know which color combos are you favorites in the comments. I’d love to know!
