The Challenge was created by Joanne Hawker to help get her out of a creative rut on Instagram. I’ve been feeling a little sticky with my relationship to social media as well and this challenge has been the perfect remedy.

#MarchMeetTheMaker is a 31 day Instagram Challenge, set by Joanne Hawker (and solely Joanne!) that runs throughout March every year. But it’s more than just a challenge, it’s a creative community that comes together to show people what they can do. It’s about building each other up, making new connections, telling your small business story, growing your confidence (and Instagram following) and most importantly, it’s about putting yourself out there. (From the Website)

Be sure to follow my instagram @magick_socks

Celestial Beings Collection

Celestial Beings

Several years ago I collaborated with the non-profit Turning the Wheel to create a wonderfully whimsy deck of inspirational cards called “The Good Box.” The project was focused on reclaiming the word good as a positive meditation word and resulted in the creation of 30 affirmation cards all with a phrase about the innate goodness in all of us. My art is featured on the cards, and I played an important hand in the final design. After the completion of the deck of cards I felt activated to create more paintings inspired by the goodness all around us. The “Celestial Beings” Series grew organically from this starting point. The full series was on view at Fresh Thymes Eatery on 30th Street in Boulder this past summer.

Celestial Beings

Each multimedia painting was an exploration into the innate goodness around all of us. The mood created by the soft blues and purples adds a sense of ease and flow to spaces and my hope was that each would be a place of solace for the eye to rest. The name celestial beings came from a meditative journey focused on the stars, and from that meditation I felt a deep sense of the longevity of goodness that emanates from the great beyond.

Need More Good In Your Life? All of the “Celestial Beings” pieces are still available for purchase so if you feel called by their sense of goodness please send me an email at arts@khirilee.com.

My favorite piece from the collection was voted the winner of local jewelers “Canvas to Cuff” contest. “Celestial Being 6” is now a part of their EVOCATEUR cuff artist series. Feel free to swing over there and take a look at this special piece of wearable art. Walters and Hogsett, 2425 CANYON BOULEVARD, BOULDER, CO 80302.

Mini Butterfly Canvases

You know what makes me happy? Mini art. Little tidbits of artistic magnificence that you can tuck away on those on walls in your home that are hard to decorate. Delicate watercolors and little Milagros and shrines and exquisite oil paintings. I love that stuff!

And now I have my own collection of little delicate masterpieces to share with all of you!

IMG_8472.JPG

It all started with the acquisition of my cherished butterfly punch. I loved the little butterfly prints so much I wanted to showcase them and share them with the world. I bought a bunch of mini canvases and through the addition of art resin ended with a polished little gem of whimsy fun. Each butterfly is unique! Each butterfly is punched from one of my gelli prints. The patterns and shapes and colors of the prints reminded me of the kaleidoscopic beauty of real butterflies. This is just my first iteration on this project but I see it evolving to include different color palettes and inspirations. For now it’s simply a wild and eclectic explosion of color!

You can take these little beauties home on July 22nd at the A Place to B Studio Swap and Sell. Hope to see you there! Facebook Event

Let me know which color combos are you favorites in the comments. I’d love to know!

Joy Journal – A Capsule of My Time at Summer Retreat 2017

For the past several years I have attended “The Body Now” Summer Retreat as a lead facilitator for Turning the Wheel. It has become a time for me grow in my leadership skills and to rest into my self so that I can step back into the world bright and inspired. This year was no different and the I feel filled to the brim with joyous energy. I’m ready world. Watch out!

As part of the week of moving, playing, learning, breathing, connecting, and dancing we all have the opportunity to express ourselves through art. This years art project was to create a journal and the supplies and options were simply abundant. Each day I made several art pages that captured glimpses from the meditations and learnings of the week. My journal was quite expansive by the end. I wanted to share with you a few of my favorite pages from the week.

I had the blissful opportunity to work on this while others were singing and dancing nearby. It was lovely.

A bag of tricks to keep me going forward. Stamping feathers might be my new favorite thing.

Dance Shrines – Current Inspiration

I’ve blogged about my little shrine assemblages many times and I am happy to say that I am at the end of the exploration. This past month I used up the last of my little wooden plaques in the best set of shrines I have created to date!

IMG_8361

The latest series of shrines are all dedicated to my love of dance, specifically tribal fusion belly dance, which I have been practicing on and off for the past 6 years. This last summer I jumped back into the practice and it has been so rich and fulfilling that I felt called to make art that came from the inspiration I feel from the colorful costumes and intricate dancing. I also want to shout out to my troupe, The Tribal Misfits, for being such fun to dance with and to my instructor Ashanti, who is one of the most creative people I have ever met. Thanks!

IMG_8364

Creating the shrines boils down to three steps:

First I find and create the focal image for the shrine. For this collection I used stills from performances of myself and other troupe members. I started looking for fresh images but eventually came back around to using images from my elements series I created in 2014. I then set about watercoloring the dancing figures on watercolor, which is one of my most treasured art activities.

Second, I decorate the actual wooden part of the shrine. IMG_8348.JPGThis generally involves a combination of decoupage, painting, and spontaneity. Decoupage is the lovely process of gluing papers and other decorative pieces to an object. I like combining handmade papers, tissue papers, and recycled clippings from cards, gift wrap, and other notions to create a blend of layers and colors. I also decided to spray paint some of the shrines, and also revisit some old patterns drawn on with paint pen that I loved back in 2014. I like all the different textures created from the different techniques.

Third, I put the two pieces together, integrating the dancing figures into the decorated shrine. This sometimes involves adding additional elements to blend the foreground with the background and other times simply means gluing the figure on top of everything to create a more bold composition. I have two of each figure in this series, which appeals to my sense of variety.

I was also pleased to resolve to shrines that had been lying around in my studio unfinished since I started working with them in 2014. They’ve traveled halfway across the country and back, and it feels so good to say with confidence that they are complete!

These shrines, and others, will be for sale at A Place to B’s Summertime Swap and Sell on July 22nd.

If you can’t wait till then – please contact me!
